Why I’m Building Backlinks for My Portfolio (And How You Can Start Too)
After months of optimising on‑page SEO – titles, meta descriptions, internal links, schema – my portfolio was technically sound. But one thing was missing: backlinks.
Backlinks are links from other websites to yours. Google treats them as “votes of confidence.” Without them, even a perfectly optimised site struggles to rank for competitive keywords.
So I started a simple, realistic backlink‑building campaign. Here’s what I’m doing – and why.
Why Backlinks Matter for a Portfolio
- Authority signal – Google sees links from trusted sites (directories, alumni pages, guest posts) as proof that your content is valuable.
- Referral traffic – A link from a relevant blog or directory can send real visitors who are already interested in your work.
- Competitive edge – Most student portfolios have zero backlinks. Earning even 5–10 quality links puts you ahead.
For a portfolio that showcases SEO work, having no backlinks is like a chef having no reviews. It’s not fatal, but it weakens the story.
My 3-Step Backlink Plan (No Spam)
1. Local Directories (foundational)
I listed my portfolio on:
- Justdial (free business listing)
- Sulekha, AskLaila, Hotfrog
- (Still pending: completion and verification)
These give me do‑follow or no‑follow links, but more importantly, they establish NAP consistency (Name, Address, Phone) for local SEO.
Time spent: ~20 minutes per directory.
2. Outreach to my university (in progress)
I’m a BBA student. My university has a placement cell, a department newsletter, and an alumni page. I’ve prepared a short pitch offering to write a 300‑word piece on “How a BBA student built an SEO portfolio.” A single .edu backlink would be worth 10 directory links.
3. Community engagement (ongoing)
- LinkedIn – sharing portfolio posts and commenting on SEO threads.
- Reddit / Indie Hackers – answering questions about SEO, occasionally linking to relevant case studies.
No mass emailing. No buying links. Just authentic participation.
What I’ve Learned So Far
- The first backlinks are the hardest – once you have a few, it’s easier to get more.
- Directories are boring but necessary – they fill the “zero” gap and help with local SEO.
- Patience is key – Google can take 2–4 weeks to show new links in Search Console.
- Don’t wait for perfection – start with one directory today.
How You Can Start
- List your site on 2–3 free local directories (Justdial, Hotfrog).
- Ask a former client or colleague for a quick testimonial + link.
- Write a helpful comment on a blog post you admire (with a natural link to your work).
- Reach out to your university or local business organisation.
You don’t need 100 backlinks. Five good ones will already separate you from most student portfolios.
What’s Next for Me
- Complete verification on Justdial and Sulekha.
- Send the university pitch before the end of the week.
- Track new backlinks in Google Search Console (check the “Links” report monthly).
I’ll share another update once the first quality backlink appears.
