Why Local Businesses in Ahmedabad Still Ignore SEO (And a 4‑Step Fix)

3 minute read

During my SEO internship at Shaligram Infotech, I have spoken with dozens of local business owners in Ahmedabad – cafes, retailers, service providers, and small manufacturers. A recurring theme emerges: many still do not invest in search engine optimisation.

This post explores why that happens and, more importantly, how we – as SEO professionals – can change it.

Why Local Businesses Ignore SEO

1. “I already show up on Google when someone searches my name.”

Many owners search their exact business name, find themselves on page one, and assume there is no problem. They do not realise that customers rarely search by name. They search for “cafe near Prahlad Nagar” or “best AC repair in Satellite”. If a business does not rank for those generic terms, it remains invisible to new customers.

2. “I tried SEO once, and it didn’t work.”

A common story: a business paid someone who promised fast results, saw no change after three months, and wrote off SEO as a scam. The issue is not SEO itself – it is unrealistic promises and poor execution. True SEO takes 3‑6 months of consistent work, especially for local keywords.

3. “Word of mouth is enough.”

For decades, Ahmedabad businesses grew through community referrals and walk‑ins. That model still works, but it leaves money on the table. A well‑optimised Google Business Profile and a handful of local keywords can bring in new customers who have never heard of the business – expanding beyond word‑of‑mouth reach.

4. “It’s too expensive.”

Some assume SEO requires a large agency retainer. In reality, many basic fixes are low‑cost or even free:

  • Claiming and completing a GBP listing
  • Fixing missing meta descriptions
  • Encouraging customer reviews

Businesses do not need a ₹50,000/month campaign to see initial wins.

How to Change That: Practical Persuasion

Through my internship experience, I have learned that telling a business owner “you need SEO” rarely works. Instead, I use four approaches that actually resonate.

1. Show them the numbers – from their own market

I prepare a simple one‑page report showing three competitors that outrank them for a relevant keyword like “best [service] in [area]”. I then estimate the monthly search volume for that term. Seeing a competitor getting hundreds of views while they get zero creates immediate awareness.

2. Start with the free GBP fix

Rather than proposing a full audit, I offer to optimise their Google Business Profile for free in exchange for a testimonial. Once they see a 50% increase in direction requests or calls within 4‑6 weeks, they become willing to pay for deeper work.

3. Translate SEO into business metrics

I never say “we need to improve domain authority.” I say:

  • “This change can bring you 30 more phone calls per month.”
  • “Fixing your load time will keep customers from leaving to a competitor.”

Business owners understand revenue, not technical jargon.

4. Offer a low‑risk pilot

A three‑month pilot focused on 5‑10 local keywords with a clear monthly report (rankings, calls, direction requests) builds trust. When they see traffic and inquiries increase, they renew.

Real Example from My Internship

The Ahmedabad cafe client mentioned in my SEO audit case study initially said: “We rely on foot traffic – we don’t need Google.” After showing them that 1,200 people search for “best coffee Ahmedabad” every month, they agreed to a pilot. Within 90 days, direction requests grew by 400% and phone inquiries quadrupled.

Final Thought

Local SEO is not a luxury for Ahmedabad businesses – it is a competitive necessity. The gap is not technical skill; it is mindset. Our job as SEO professionals is to educate, demonstrate value with small wins, and speak the language of business owners: more customers, more calls, more revenue.
